Pirates to Begin Spring Football Practice​

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 14, 2024) … Hampton will open its spring football drills on Thursday, Feb. 15, Coach Robert Prunty announced.

The Pirates posted an improved 5-6 record last season including notable victories over FCS Championship participant Richmond, traditional powerhouse Grambling State, and archrival Howard.

A total of 79 players return from last year's squad including quarterback Chris Zellous (1,497 yards passing with 13 TDs and 559 rushing yards and nine TDs in 2023) and running back Elijah Burris (100.4 yards per game rushing with six touchdowns a year ago) on offense. Defensive backs Corey Wilson (37 tackles in 2023) and Jordan White (35 tackles, two interceptions), and linebacker Ze'Marion Harrell (33 tackles and three tackles for loss a year ago) will anchor the defense.

Hampton had a successful recruiting season. The Pirates landed 14 players including nine incoming freshmen and five college transfers.

Hampton opens the 2024 season on Aug. 31 when the Pirates take on Morgan State in the Prudential Brick City Classic in Harrison, N.J. The home opener comes a week later when Hampton entertains Virginia Union on Sept. 7 at Armstrong Stadium.
