Pirates Fall on the Road to the Seawolves of Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team fell on the road to Stony Brook 93-73. The Seawolves shot 62 percent from the field in the first half. While the Pirates had Kyrese Mullen and Jordan Nesbitt finish with 20 or more points, they could not keep up with SBU's offense. Stony Brook in the final 20 minutes shot over 65 percent from the field. 

Hampton would lose the tip but scored the contest's first points with a three from Kyrese Mullen. The Norfolk, Va. native, started out the contest on fire scoring HU's first ten points. While both offenses started out slow, SBU started to hit shots coming out of the first media timeout. However, the Pirates continued to keep it within a couple of possessions.

With 7:51 to go in the first half, Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad brought it back to within three points. Mullen continued to be a dominant force on the offensive end. Jordan Nesbitt also had a strong half scoring 10 points. Nesbitt would finish the game with a season-high 20 points. 

Coming out of the under-eight media timeout, Stony Brook took its first double-digit lead of the contest. With the Seawolves going on an 11-2 run, SBU had 15 point advantage (45-30) in the final minutes of the half. The Pirate's defense held the Seawolves scoreless for the remainder of the first 20 minutes. Going into the half Hampton trailed 45-32.

Stony Brook's hot shooting continued during the remainder of the contest. In back-to-back halves, the Seawolves shot over 60 percent from the field. At the 15:53 mark, SBU gained its largest lead of the night 61-36. While the Pirates made five threes in the second half, HU's offense could not keep up.

Hampton returns to action this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Towson inside the Convocation Center.
